WELCOME TO ETLp
When did my job run?
Which scripts were we using? How often are they called? They worked last month didn't they?
I'm trawling though the log files, but I can't see where things went wrong.
I'm so sick of putting boilerplate alerting and checks in my ETL code. Can't it just happen...
Not another script to dump CSVs in a database! Can't we make this easier? Surely we can automate basic tasks.
Is your ETL out of control? ETLp can help!
ETLp is an application framework for supporting ETL tasks by arranging them in a pipeline. It is designed to provide a standardised way for ETL developers to implement their processing, while also removing the burden of capturing and logging audit information. It provides utilities that perform common tasks such as loading and validating data, and emailing errors. This allows developers to spend more time focusing on business logic and less time on application housekeeping.

WHAT IS AN ETLp PIPELINE?
A pipeline is simply a series of processing instructions that can be divided into three distinct phases:
pre-processing: tasks that must be performed before the main processing begins
processing: the main tasks
post-processing: tasks that should be run after the main event - e.g. stats generation, cleanup tasks.
Note: These phases are simply conceptual. There is no change to the processing if a task is moved from the pre-processing to the processing phase, but the phases help to organise the design of the processing.
A completed pipeline may then invoke another pipeline
CONFIGURATION-DRIVEN DEVELOPMENT
The functionality of ETLp is driven by simple configuration files. ETLp provides a set of basic functionality, including:
unzip and zip files
validate records and generate a report with errors
load csv files into the database
invoke Oracle stored procedures and packages
call OS commands
Watch directories for files to appear - and then process them.
A runtime audit engine keeps track of all processing, including error messages, execution time and rows loaded.
The purpose for using configuration to drive the ETL is to give structure and auditability to the environment.
RUNTIME AUDITING
All activity is recorded in a runtime auditing database, and is viewable from the Audit Browser. This allows developers to drill down into jobs and see their execution history and associated messages.
EXTENSIBLE
ETLp provides all the features most people need, but what if you have a specific requirement that's not met in the core functionality? You can extend the framework by writing your own plugins. The API is simple and you need never be limited by the core functionality.

REQUIREMENTS
ETLp is written in Perl, and has been tested with Oracle 11g, PostgreSQL 8 and MySQL 5 on Linux (CentOS 5). We're keen to hear from people who have or would like to use it in other environments.
FUTURE ENHANCEMENTS
Upcoming features:
Support for MySQL's loader.
Support for MySQL stored procedures.
Support for the Infobright loader.
Web interface for scheduling jobs.

ETLp IS OPEN SOURCE
ETLp is an open source rewrite of a proprietary system. We would like to acknowledge its roots, while at the same time building on the past experience to recreate a more extensible solution for the community.
